Jakmat driveways - the permeable alternative to concrete

Jakmat driveways - the permeable alternative to concrete

Need a new driveway? Jakmat Geocell Ground Stabilisation Mats provide a sustainable and cost-effective alternative to traditional concrete driveways, allowing homeowners to achieve a softer, more natural finish, whilst maintaining a high degree of permeability.

This property in Whangateau, north of Auckland, is close to sea level and sits on a flood plain. For this reason, the owners, Mack & Anne, were keen for a driveway solution that was attractive but didn’t create the water collection and runoff issues typical of concrete driveways.

Arron from Knight Contracting suggested Jakmat, and the result speaks for itself:

“When we recently took on a challenging landscaping project that involved renewing a driveway ( 1000sqm ) we knew we needed Jakmat for its durability and its aesthetic appeal. Jakmat proved to be incredibly adaptable to shape and fit this driveway without any difficulties. We also turned to Jakmat for its Long-term structural form where heavy vehicles can drive on it without any compromise. When we completed this driveway project the clients were very happy!”

Arron from Knight Contracting installed the Jakmat driveway in 2023.

Starting with a base course of compacted GAP 40 metal, topped with a layer of GAP 20. Arron then laid the Jakmat, shaping it to fit the gentle curves of the contoured driveway, with its welcoming natural sweep up to the house entrance. Once the mats were installed, a top layer of decorative pebbles were brushed into the cells - and the job was done.

Owner Mack enjoys the fact that the decorative pebbles offer a pleasant crunch and a little bit of ‘give’ when walked on, while still staying in place thanks to the unique geocell design. In the two years since it was installed, the Jakmat driveway has required very little maintenance and looks as good as new. Even with multiple vehicle and boat trailers traversing the driveway, there are no wheel tracks or ridges formed, as the Jakmats keep the pebbles in place.

“Jakmat has become a valuable asset in our landscaping projects. The quality of the product has elevated the standard of our work, earning us the trust and satisfaction of our clients. I recommend Jakmat to any landscape professional or anyone looking to achieve great quality results.”
